FROM THE EDITOR
I can remember the groundbreaking for Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Centennial Park in May of 2022. I snapped the above photo, of the park's model, a far-off excavator, and other early arrivals to the presentation. The energy was joyful, hopeful, celebratory.
It was also impossible to fathom the true scope and construction timeline of a park we wouldn't step foot in for over three years. Where there was once inaccessible industrial property, like an old Detroit Free Press printing facility (as recently as 2007!), there will now be 22 acres of beautiful, varied outdoor offerings. From a water garden and enormous children's playground to a sports house and grassy summit to tranquil tree-lined walking paths, Wilson Park promises to be the "crowning jewel" of the Detroit Riverfront.
On October 25 at 10 a.m., in a ceremony not unlike the groundbreaking, Detroit Riverfront Conservancy will officially open its largest park to date. What will follow will be a free, two-day celebration unique to any other the Conservancy has hosted.
For starters, Harvest Fest will take place at Wilson Park for one year only. Three stages will feature live entertainment, activities will take place at all four zones of the park, food trucks, games, trick-or-treating and some special additions will all be part of the history-making weekend.
I know my children are most looking forward to the bear slide at Delta Dental Play Garden. I'm most looking forward to a walk up the DTE Foundation Summit.
I hope to see you at Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Centennial Park this October!
